Virtual Artists

My first international experience was with Virtual Artists in Adelaide, Australia. You can imagine the step from having lived in the small town of Furtwangen, Germany, and then moving to the other side of the world, all with the preparation time of less than a month.

At Virtual Artists, I worked as a web developer and researcher for new technologies. It was a great experience to be in this start-up on a different continent at the very beginning of the Internet. My own project was to create a website for youth centers for less fortunate children in under-developed areas.

I did webpage development using HTML and Javascript. I also created VRML2 sites just after the specifications came out. As a researcher for new technologies, I was responsible for finding new markets for the company.

I also administered their Unix server and gained profound networking knowledge.

Another unique experience was the Internet workshop we held for underprivileged indigenous people of Australia. Staying in contact with their families is for Aborigines of much higher importance than for western cultures, and they welcome technological advances to do so, even in those early days of email and the Web.
